Is it a verruca or a corn?

They are easy to confuse and they need completely different treatment. A verruca is caused by a virus and tends to interrupt the natural lines of the skin, often with tiny dark dots within it, and it is usually more uncomfortable when squeezed from the sides than when pressed straight down. A corn does the opposite. Getting that distinction right at the first appointment saves months of treating the wrong thing.

What treatment involves

First appointmentThirty minutes. The lesion is assessed and confirmed, overlying hard skin is carefully debrided so that treatment can actually reach it, and the first treatment is applied. You will be told what to expect and how long a course usually runs.

Treatments within a courseTwenty minutes each, spaced out over the following weeks. Debride, reassess, treat, review.

Reviewing as you goProgress is looked at honestly at each visit. If something is not working, it gets changed rather than repeated.

Being straight about outcomes

Verrucae are stubborn. Many clear on their own eventually — sometimes over months, sometimes over a couple of years — and no treatment anywhere can promise to clear one. What treatment does is speed things along, keep it comfortable to walk on, and stop it spreading. If a course is not getting anywhere, you will be told.

How many treatments will I need?

It varies a great deal. Several appointments over a number of weeks is typical, and some verrucae take considerably longer. The prepaid course of four at £130 covers the first appointment plus three treatments.

Is treatment painful?

Debridement itself should not hurt. Some treatments leave the area tender for a day or two, and you will be told beforehand what to expect.

Are verrucae contagious?

Yes. They spread through warm, damp floors — swimming pools, changing rooms, shared showers. Wearing flip-flops in those places and not sharing towels helps a great deal.

Can children be treated?

Yes. Children's verrucae are very common and often clear on their own, so treatment is discussed with a light touch rather than pushed.

Should I just leave it?

Sometimes that is a perfectly reasonable answer, and Catherine will say so. Treatment makes more sense when it is painful, spreading, or has been there a long time.
