How the wax is removed

Removal here is by irrigation — the method many people still call syringing, though the equipment has moved on a long way from the old metal syringe. Warm water at a controlled temperature and a controlled pressure is used to flush the softened wax gently out of the canal. It is not uncomfortable, and most people are surprised how quick it is.

Water at the wrong temperature is what causes the dizziness people sometimes remember from years ago, which is why it is warmed to body temperature. The ear canal and eardrum are checked before and after.

Why two appointments

First visit — assessmentThe ear is examined to confirm that wax is the problem and that removal is safe and suitable for you. You are given wax softener to use at home, with instructions.
Ten to fourteen days of softeningThis is the part people are tempted to skip. Softened wax comes away far more easily and far more comfortably — it makes the difference between a quick appointment and an uncomfortable one.
Second visit — removalThe wax is removed from both ears and the ear canal and drum are checked afterwards. Most people notice the difference immediately.

If it isn't suitable, you pay nothing

The £65 covers both visits or neither. If the assessment finds that removal is not appropriate for you — because of a perforation, a current infection, recent ear surgery, grommets, or anything else found on examination — there is no charge, and you will be told who to see instead.

Please do not use cotton buds. They push wax deeper and pack it against the drum, which is a common reason an ear needs professional clearing in the first place.

A note on scope

Ear wax removal is a separately qualified service and sits outside standard foot health practice. It is offered here because it is a genuine local gap, not as an add-on to foot treatment, and it can be booked entirely on its own.

It is not a substitute for having hearing loss investigated. If your hearing does not come back once the wax is cleared, see your GP — wax is only one of the reasons hearing changes.

Is this microsuction?
No. Removal here is by irrigation — warm water at a controlled temperature and pressure, which is the method commonly known as syringing. Both irrigation and microsuction are recognised ways of clearing wax, and each suits some ears better than others. The assessment at the first appointment is exactly where that is decided, and if irrigation is not right for your ears you will be told so and not charged.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can book directly, online or by telephone.
Does it hurt?
It should not. That is exactly why the wax is softened for ten to fourteen days first — it comes away easily rather than having to be worked at.
How long does the appointment take?
Both visits are short. The softening period in between is what takes the time, not the appointments themselves.
What if my ears turn out not to need it?
Then you are not charged. The £65 covers both visits or neither.
Can you do it if I wear hearing aids?
Yes — hearing aid wearers are among the most common patients for this, because aids trap wax in the canal. Bring your aids with you.
Do I need to use drops before my first appointment?
No. Come as you are for the assessment; the softener is provided then, so that it is the right one for you.
